The Local Action Group (LAG) Valle d’Aosta is a recognised non-profit private association, established in 2016 with the primary aim of coordinating and implementing the Local Development Strategy (LDS), a document created within the framework of the EU “LEADER” programme.
The Local Action Group Valle d’Aosta, the only one operating in the regional territory, is made up of 84 public and private members representative of the local socio-economic reality and works with the objective of creating development opportunities for the area.
LEADER (Liaison Entre Actions de Développement de l’Économie Rurale – Liaison Between Rural Economy Development Actions) is a European Union initiative which, since 1993, has promoted sustainable and integrated development of rural areas, tailored to local potential. In these areas, Local Action Groups are established to finance integrated, multidisciplinary actions that involve all sectors of the rural economy and society, aimed at enhancing environmental and landscape resources, historical and cultural heritage, food and gastronomy, crafts, and the arts.
The strategic objectives of LAG Valle d’Aosta are:
The enhancement of rural buildings, the historical and artistic heritage, the natural landscape, and tourism resources;
Improving the living conditions of local populations and the attractiveness of the area;
Promoting the use of local agri-food products to increase their consumption among residents and tourists;
Integration and innovation of agri-food supply chains to foster multifunctionality in agricultural enterprises;
The spread of green or soft mobility throughout the territory.
The geographical area covered by the LAG Valle d’Aosta occupies almost the entire territory of the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta and includes all the municipalities of the region. As regards the municipality of Aosta, only the hilly areas to the north of the regional capital, classified as rural, fall within the LAG area.

Aosta Valley is Italy’s smallest region, located in the north-west of the country, nestled among the most imposing peaks of the Alps on the border with France, Switzerland and Piedmont, with over 60% of its territory above 2,000 metres. The region is characterised by a main valley crossed by the Dora Baltea river and 14 side valleys spread over two sides: the “adret”, facing south on the orographic left, which is brighter and has a drier and warmer climate, and the “envers”, located north on the orographic right, which is often shaded and has a harsher and snowier climate.
It is therefore a heterogeneous area with:
Aosta Valley is rich in culture (castles, villages, traditional crafts, traditional events), natural beauty (Gran Paradiso National Park, Mont Avic Natural Park, nature reserves, alpine botanical gardens), sports (skiing, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, rafting, …) and excellent food and wine products (4 PDO products, DOC wines, PAT products, typical local cuisine recipes).
All these elements form the basis of the LAG’s work and the initiatives that are proposed and organised to support the development of the territory.

For the programming period 2023-2027, LAG Valle d’Aosta decided to shape its Strategy with an innovative vision while maintaining continuity of action, essential for solid local development.
The Strategy will be implemented in the LAG area focusing on:
LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS, DISTRICTS, AGRICULTURAL AND AGRI-FOOD CHAINS
Actions under this area aim to create integrated food chains – collective projects proposed by businesses from various sectors (agriculture, production, retail, tourism/hospitality) seeking to develop or promote a specific agri-food product.
COLLECTIVE AND INCLUSIVE SERVICES, SPACES AND BUILDINGS
This area targets public authorities and non-profit associations, supporting initiatives for landscape preservation and co-designed projects to develop services for residents, businesses and tourists.
ACCOMPANYING ACTIONS
In addition to LDS activities, the LAG intends to implement accompanying actions to support participants in the various calls for funding, including a flagship project aimed at creating and developing agri-food chains.
